  • Justin Cummins

    Justin has degrees in Finance and Entrepreneurship from the University of Arizona and their McGuire Entrepreneurship program. He started by joining a regional nonprofit as the finance officer and worked with a team to tell the story of the nonprofit through numbers. He loves building organizations towards financial sustainability and reinvesting positive financial performance back into the mission. Justin grew up in Houston, Texas, but has lived in Tucson, Arizona for the past 20 years where he enjoys hiking, biking, basketball and travelling with his wife and two kids.

  • Rachel Katz

    Rachel grew up collating invoices and working with Quickbooks to support her entrepreneurial parents on Long Island in NY. She then switched coasts to attend Stanford University and moved on to rural Missouri where she spent 18 years at an ecovillage she helped create. In 2014 she returned to the Bay Area and has been doing the work she loves: helping build the sustainability of organizations doing great work in the community. She keeps her love of the outdoors and being active!

  • Jennifer Macias

    Jennifer brings over 30 years of expertise in finance, operations, HR, and IT management. Her passion for numbers and finance emerged during her early career at UC Berkeley's Multicultural Action Team, leading her to progressively challenging positions in both private and nonprofit sectors. Jennifer's career has been dedicated to nonprofits and organizations focused on social and environmental impact, driven by her personal experiences and commitment to equity and inclusivity. A native Californian, now residing in Davis, CA, Jennifer balances her professional life with her roles as a mother, grandmother, and wife. In her leisure time, she enjoys paddleboarding in challenging conditions and sharing meals with friends and family.

  • Erin Manning

    Erin grew up in a small town in Northern California where her graduating class consisted of eleven students. She is the fourth of six kids and has two, going on three, nephews and three nieces as well as two fifteen-year-old cats named Cyd and Oggie. She fell into nonprofit accounting after working at a for-profit CPA firm for eight years and loves being a part of the bigger picture, knowing that the work she is doing is serving the community. Erin loves to paint, read and hang out with friends and watch movies and tv.

  • Debrah Miller

    Deborah grew up in LA and moved to New York in her junior year of high school where she met her husband of 55 years. They have three children and six grandchildren, whom they greatly enjoy spending time with! She likes to bike, hike, swim, read, play guitar and listen to music. She is proud of her BA in English Literature, and a lifetime of experience in managing people, organizations, and finances. She participated in the AIDS Lifecycle bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles for 10 consecutive years, and raised over $50K for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Deborah started as a part-time bookkeeper when her youngest was 18 months old and her commitment to nonprofits grew from there. She loves working in the nonprofit sector because it's about telling a compelling story in order to raise awareness and support for mission driven organizations that will undoubtedly make the world a better place.

  • Janice Sager

    Janice is a Canadian citizen. She was born and grew up in Montreal, Canada and has a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Sociology from McGill University. She also has a Master's in Arts Administration from Columbia. Although her earlier formal studies were in Sociology, her passion was acting and theatre. She ultimately decided to focus on the business side of theatre - hence the degree in Arts Administration. Prior to joining Shining Star Consulting, her entire career was spent working in finance and operations in nonprofit creative organizations - theatre, dance, film, public broadcasting (radio and television) and nonprofit journalism. Janice is married with one adult; a daughter that lives in New York City where she is focusing on her acting career. She enjoys going to the theater, dancing, reading and walking along the beach.

  • Philip Smith

    Philip is a Bay Area native who also spent 10 years in the Boston area. He currently lives with his husband, two kids and a cat and in addition to his work with Shining Star, he is also the SFO of Common Counsel Foundation. While interning with NPR in grad school Philip realized that he could do nothing else but work for organizations that are focused on improving people's lives, rather than companies that use people as a means to profits. That is what he has been able to do through his work with Shining Star Consulting and Common Counsel Foundation. He has a BA in English Literature and a BBA in Marketing from Pacific Union College as well as an MBA in Finance from Babson College.

  • Tori Talavera

    Tori grew up in Los Angeles, CA and has an MBA and BA from San Francisco University. She likes roller skating in the state park and spending time with her cat Pickle.

  • Judy Thomas

    Judy graduated with a BA in Art from the College of Notre Dame De Namur. She lived in the Bay Area for 60 years and moved to Central Oregon in 2016. Judy enjoys nature, artwork, spirituality, community singing and history. Every week she gets to spend time with her two amazing grandkids and her son (their father). She lives with her 12 year old golden retriever, Daisy. I first started in nonprofits as a Controller Consultant in 2000 and progressed to Director of Finance and Administration then CFO. I noticed a tremendous need for best businesses practices in that role and found a niche for my business and accounting skills and experiences; to provide these services to other non profits. I love helping organizations become financially strong with impactful business systems to support their missions.

  • Luna Vu

    Luna grew up in Vietnam and migrated to California when she was eleven years old. She has called California her home ever since! She enjoys reading, practicing the piano, travelling and spending time with family and friends. Luna loves supporting nonprofits and contributing to multiple organizations. She also enjoys helping clients roll out new technologies, pioneer new financial models and rebuild finance and accounting functions. Luna graduated from UC Davis with a BS in Biological Sciences and attended various community colleges throughout the Bay Area taking accounting courses to prepare her for the CPA exam.
