  • Ruth Chang - Acting Senior Director

    Ruth was born in Taiwan, but raised in the Bay Area where she went to school, eventually earning her BS in Bioengineering. Her professional career started in insurance and risk management, where she focused on protecting people and property. While looking for a change, she found one with Shining Star where she was offered the opportunity to learn about accounting for nonprofits. She continues to grow and learn here! Ruth loves supporting organizations that are doing so much good in the world, which aligns with her personal values: taking care of the environment and being good stewards of the resources we are lucky to have and of the people in our communities. She has two sons that have been launched into the world as a cyber security programmer and a piano tuner. Ruth has three cats - Gigi, Kiki and Lily - who often her her with her work. She enjoys singing and going on international tours with various Bay Area choirs and playing taiko (Japanese) drums. She also enjoys gardening and has a goal learning the art of Bonsai.

  • Kodi Akins

    Kodi is passionate about empowering mission-driven organizations with accurate financial information to ensure their sustainability and success. His journey into the nonprofit sector began at his church, where he discovered a love for the work. He is committed to continuously strengthening his accounting skills and aims to obtain his CPA license within the next five years. Having grown up in the Midwest, Kodi has recently returned to the Chicagoland area. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Spanish Literary Studies from Occidental College and a Master of Science in Accounting from California State University - Los Angeles. Outside of work, Kodi is a twin who enjoys watching sports and listening to jazz music.

  • Marcos Demetrio

    Marcos holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Business Administration with an Accounting concentration, and he's also a licensed Enrolled Agent with the IRS and a Certified Fraud Examiner. Driven by a lifelong goal of serving marginalized communities, Marcos found that accounting allowed him to merge his professional skills with his personal values, supporting an organization's mission from a critical, non-client-facing role. He thrives on the constant critical thinking and problem-solving the field demands. A native of East Los Angeles, Marcos continues to live in the greater L.A. region. He's been married to his husband for over 12 years, and they're currently focused on achieving a healthy work-life balance to maximize quality time and create lasting memories with their three toddlers, aged 4, 2, and 1. Outside of work and family, Marcos enjoys running, going to the gym, traveling, playing video games, reading, and binge-watching TV shows.

  • Kelley Gibbs, CPA, MBA

    Kelley grew up in the Philippines and came to the US to get his BA in Geology at Colorado College, his BS in Accounting at Menlo College and his SBA, MBA at Thunderbird Graduate School. He discovered his love of accounting and supporting nonprofits through his experience of preparing applications for organizations and being a part of their creation and mission. He has enjoyed making a difference ever since. Kelley enjoys writing stories, maintaining friendships and volunteering for nonprofits.

  • Alyssa Grant

    Alyssa got into nonprofit accounting while auditing. She loved the fact that working with nonprofits allows her to have an impact on making the world a better place and loves having the opportunity to continue learning new concepts that helps others and advances her career. Alyssa grew up in Buffalo, NY and received her Bachelor's and Master's of Science in Accounting from SUNY, along with an active CPA in NY. With her husband of almost 20 years, Alyssa has a Dalmador, two nieces and two nephews and she loves them all immensely. Alyssa loves going to antique stores, cooking, reading and genealogy research. Fall is her favorite season and she is waiting to see the Bills win a Super Bowl.

  • Jenna Jacques

    Jenna was born and raised in the Bay Area, but moved to Las Vegas in 2016 and has resided there ever since with her partner Matt. She received her undergraduate degree in Comparative Literature with a minor in Mathematics at Mills College. Jenna began her nonprofit career with an organization in San Francisco as a payroll clerk during the recession. Seeing the work and its impact on their clients - people with mental health disabilities getting back into the workforce - inspired her to continue in the nonprofit realm. Service work is a calling and she is still friends with people she worked with at that original organization.

  • Ann Marrese

    Ann grew up in Massachusetts and earned her Bachelor's degree in Business Studies/Accounting at Southern New Hampshire University. Since then, she has relocated to Naples, FL, which means she gets to travel between both places often. She loves being an accountant in the nonprofit sector as it allows her to use her skills set to help organizations that make a difference. Knowing that she is a part of something bigger keeps her motivated. When not working, Ann and her husband love spending time with family, especially their two new grandbabies!

  • Jon Ogle

    Jon grew up in Folsom, CA and graduated from William Jessep University with a BS in Business with concentrations in both Accounting and Finance. He got into nonprofit accounting through supporting nonprofits at the first accounting firm he worked at. He then moved to working for a nonprofit full time for 5 years. Jon loves supporting nonprofits because of the meaning it gives his work; spreadsheets are no longer just numbers on a page, but a tool that supports the wonderful programs nonprofits provide to positively impact the community. Jon loves to spend time with his parents, friends and nature as well as working out.

  • Kim Shepherd

    Kim has dedicated her career to the nonprofit sector since 2015, driven by a passion for community outreach. As a Director of Accounting, she thrives on providing accurate and efficient accounting services to help organizations achieve their missions. Kim holds a Bachelor's and Master's in Business Administration with an Accounting concentration, and she is both a licensed Enrolled Agent and a Certified Fraud Examiner. Originally from South Louisiana's "Cajun Country," Kim now lives in North Louisiana with her husband of over 12 years and their three toddlers. Her focus is on maintaining a healthy work-life balance to create lasting family memories. She enjoys quiet moments, traveling, and quality time with her family.

  • Mimi Shum

    Mimi began her journey into accounting when an Oakland based nonprofit took a chance on her and brought her on board as a bookkeeper without any experience. Since then she has loved being in a position to support organizations by helping them better understand their financials so they can make practical decisions for the future and continue to achieve their goals. She was raised in Oakland and has a soft spot for the Bay Area. She lives with her high school sweetheart and they have been together for almost 30 years. Mimi enjoys cooking and combining her two other hobbies of traveling and riding roller coasters. She has visited 53 amusement parks and has plenty more on her list!

  • Douglas Wentworth

    Doug likes to visit national parks with his family and working with others for a purpose he can believe in. He grew up in Massachusetts, but has been in San Francisco, CA for more than twenty years. He has a BA in Political Science from Tufts University.
